Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IEC?

An IEC is an Independent Educational Consultant hired by families to support students through their high school experience and help them find their "right fit" college or next steps after graduation.

Why do I need an IEC?

Currently in the U.S., the average student-to-school-counselor ratio is 311 to 1. Students receive an average of 38 minutes of 1:1 college counseling during their four years of high school. Working with an IEC increases that 1:1 time exponentially, and it allows for individualized plans to be designed to meet the needs of each student.

When is the best time to start with an IEC?

Ideally, students begin their work as a second semester 8th grader, so that they can plan their high school courses with their end goal in mind. However, beginning work with an IEC at any time during high school is advantageous.

Can an 8th or 9th grader sign up for the comprehensive plan?

Yes. Younger students can begin the comprehensive plan at any time; however, they may choose to try the introductory package first. If they move from the intro package to the comprehensive package, they will receive a $500 discount off the comprehensive plan.

Is ACT test prep included in the college planning package?

At this time, test prep and college prep are two separate services, but there is a $100 discount for students who want to take advantage of both. Also, students who enroll in the comprehensive package are guaranteed a seat in one of the ACT prep classes.

Do you accept payment plans?

Yes. One goal for Student Prep Services is to make college counseling an option for every interested family.
